What is Elementary Explorations?
Elementary Explorations is a supplementary education support program; we provide lesson plans (PLP - Parent Lesson Plans) and weekly in-class instruction. Classroom instruction is designed to reinforce the curriculum being taught at home and encourage exploration through group projects and challenges, developing listening and communication skills through team-building and critical
thinking techniques.
Schedule:
Meets Tuesdays August to April.
A la carte enrollment – Choose specific classes or the full program.
Drop-off program – Parents are not required to stay.
How the Parent-Teacher Partnership Works
Elementary Explorations creates a learning environment where parents and teachers work together to provide a well-rounded education.
Teacher Responsibilities:
Provide weekly in-class instruction.
Offer structured lesson plans (PLP) for at-home learning.
Support parents with evaluation guidance and extra assistance.
Parent Responsibilities:
Parents ensure the student’s work is being completed correctly and returned to class as needed. Grades are not recorded. The teacher will help the parent in evaluation of the student's progress and mastery. Our program is designed to complement the homeschooling family, developing in our students the skills needed to continue their education in HRM’s Secondary Academy.

Meet Zina Cowan
Elementary Explorations Director
Mrs. Cowan studied at the University of Texas in San Antonio from 1993-1995 and received her nursing license from Schriener College in Kerrville, TX in 1997. After 8 years in Alzheimer's care followed by 4 years in Pediatric triage, she retired from nursing to start a family. She has homeschooled her triplets for the past 7 years. Over the years, she has served in the Children and Youth ministries at church and has taught 3-6 grade science through HRM's Exploration program. She and her husband, Glenn, have been married over 25 years and they are members at Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood.
Explore Our Classes
Math
Level 1: Merit Masters - 3rd
Early 4th Grade
Level 2: Honor House
Advanced 4th - 5th Grade
This course will complement the curriculum of your choice. The teacher will reinforce the concepts utilizing visuals and manipulatives, incorporating real-world applications, encouraging student discussion and explanation, providing opportunities for practice through games and activities, and reviewing previously learned concepts.
This course offers 2 levels of instruction and may be repeated consecutively as needed. No book or lab fees.
Writing/Grammar
Level 1: Book Blazers
3rd - Early 4th Grade
Level 2: Narrative Navigators
Advanced 4th - 5th Grade
Using Easy Grammar, students will learn capitalization, punctuation and parts of speech. Students will learn types of sentences and how to write creative paragraphs. Class time includes group and individual writing, as well as activities using grammar concepts. The teacher will provide instruction and tools to aid the parent in evaluation.
This course offers 2 levels of instruction and may be repeated as needed. Pun Pals level will begin to learn IEW-style techniques and utilize the IEW Resource Handbook, $15
History
Level 1: Heritage Crusaders
3rd - Early 4th Grade
Level 2: Knowledge Knights
Advanced 4th - 5th Grade
This course follows The Story of the World providing instruction in World History. The teacher will reinforce the facts learned through hands-on activities and dynamic group projects. A reading plan will be provided to the parent to prepare the student for the upcoming week’s classroom activities. Teachers may assign comprehension questions or additional activities as well as supplementary reading materials to complement the current content being learned.
This class repeats on a 3 year cycle offering 2 levels of instruction each year. One time supply fee $15
Science
Level 1: Merit Masters

This class provides instruction in science using the Apologia Exploring series texts. Guided reading will be provided to the parent, as well as vocabulary definitions and questions to work on throughout the week. Experiments, hands-on activities and dynamic group projects will reinforce the concepts read at home.
This class repeats on a 3 year cycle and offers 2 levels of instruction. Hypothesis Hackers level will introduce and utilize the Scientific Method in research and experimentation. One time supply fee $15
Fun with Facts/Critical Thinking
Grades 3, 4 & 5
This class is designed to be dynamic, interactive, and engaging, ensuring that students not only learn but also develop a lifelong curiosity about the world around them. Instruction in geography, world cultures, state capitals, flags, critical thinking skills and much more through interactive and fun activities.
This class will repeat on a 3 year cycle. Morning and afternoon classes may vary.
Registration
$125 registration due by June 1 per student.
$200 registration from June 1 - July 15 per student.
Deposit will be $55 per class and a Security Fee of $50 per class.
Registration fee is non-refundable
Tuition
Tuition will be $370 per academic class for a full year. $350 for elective class for a full year. Lunch will be $150 for the year (included at no cost will full days attendance).
All classes must be paid in full by July 15. Payment plan available by request.
